China honours Indian Yoga exponent B K S Iyengar
From K J M Varma
Beijing, Jun 21 (PTI) China today honoured renowned Indian Yoga exponent B K S Iyengar, who enjoys an iconic status for introducing the spiritual discipline in the communist country, by releasing four commemorative stamps.
The stamps, commemorating the maiden visit of 93-year-old Iyengar to China, issued by the Beijing branch of the China Post were presented to him at a programme, attended by over 600 Chinese Yoga enthusiasts.
Iyengar, recipient of Padmashiri (1991) and Padmabhushan (2002), said, "I express my gratitude for treating me as an icon of China. I will cherish this all my life. I am one among you. I love you all".
He also regretted that no such stamp was issued in his honour back home.
Iyengar said he felt bad that the Indian government has not issued any stamp in his honour and instead a stamp featuring his student from England was released.
Iyengar was in China for the past one week to attend the India-China Yoga summit being organised mainly by the Yoga enthusiasts backed by the Chinese government.
He was accorded a reception by the Indian Consulate in Guangzhou, where the Yoga summit was held in which 1300 enthusiasts took part paying 1300 Yuan (USD 200).
Iyengar gave demonstration lectures.
Today he attended a reception in Beijing and made a brief presentation on Yoga to over 600 enthusiasts, mostly youth.
Iyengar said he received unbelievable response at the Yoga summit and it was a great success.
Iyengar name has become synonymous with yoga in China after several Chinese yoga enthusiasts travelled to India since mid 1990s to learn the art of yoga from him.
Currently, China has about 30,000 yoga clubs, 150,000 yoga teachers and approximately 20 million yoga practitioners.
Almost all the fitness clubs have some yoga courses to attract more customers.
Few months ago Art of Living exponent Sri Sri Ravishankar opened a centre in the outskirts of Beijing which also attracted a large crowd.
